There is a growing demand in developed countries to use recycled or unpackaged goods. Globally, 1.5 billion tons of waste is generated each year and is expected to increase to 5 billion tons by the year 2100. In the United States, more than 75 % of water bottles made of plastic end up in landfills rather than being recycled. Currently, some private companies are taking the initiative to turn waste into treasure. For example, Adidas recently announced that they will recycle 11 million plastic water bottles and turn them into 1 million sustainable tennis shoes.
