Coca-Cola aims to achieve 25% reusable packaging by 2030

Reusable packaging, including refillable containers for dispensing/fountains, refillable or recyclable glass and plastic bottles, is expected to help Coca-Cola meet its collection goals and reduce its carbon footprint.

The Coca-Cola Company has unveiled plans to achieve 25 percent reusable packaging by 2030 in support of its "Waste-Free World" environmental program.

Reusable packaging products include refillable containers for dispensing/fountains, refillable or recyclable glass and plastic bottles.

Coca-Cola said these products are expected to help the company meet its collection goals and reduce its carbon footprint, while meeting consumer preferences for sustainable packaging options.

The beverage company also said the growing number of reusable packaging and dispensing options responds to consumer affordability and sustainability preferences.

Oceana, an international advocacy group focused on ocean conservation, said Coca-Cola's announcement did not provide detailed information about what exactly the 25 percent target represents and indicators of how this might help reduce its reliance on single-use plastics and its carbon footprint.

Coca-Cola is doing the right thing for the ocean by prioritizing reusable and refillable packaging as a core strategy to reduce the company's environmental impact," Dr. Dana Miller, Oceana's director of strategic initiatives, said in a statement.

"This is a step in the right direction, but measuring this impact and holding Coca-Cola accountable for its commitment will require greater transparency, so Oceana is calling on the company to provide more details.

"We hope this means we will soon see refillable bottles in major markets that are largely non-existent, such as the United States."

In October last year, Coca-Cola entered into a partnership with Changchun Meihe Science & Technology and Finnish company UPM to commercialize next- generation biomaterials.
